The Year of Baseball

Nicholas (Nick) asked us if he could be signed up for Baseball. Sports are his first and true love and he is very talented at them. It seems that no matter what it is, he can pick it up quickly and is able to be quite competitive. With that being said, we decided that he had so much fun last year, we would sign him up again.

We typically play in the Kaysville Recreation league as they seem to do a much better job with their sports than Layton. So Nick was signed up and assigned to play on the White Sox team. About a month before we were to begin play, One of the men that Rich works with approached him as asked about Nick. He had heard that we had a boy about 9 years old and he wanted to know if we might be interested in practicing with their team . The would be playing on a Layton Competitive team in the Rocky Mountain School of Baseball league. After much discussion, we decided we would go and let him "Practice" and see where it went from there. Supposedly, there was not room on the team but we were welcome to come and practice.

Well, after the first night of practice, we were told that they wanted him to come and be apart of the team. Even though it put them at 1 more kid than they wanted, they would like Nick to play. With all of that going on, we decided we would play the Kaysville Recreation league and then play for the "Layton Young Guns" on the RMSB league as well. The goal was to get Nick some experience and have a lot of fun.

So, we began the end of March on the following Schedule.

Monday, Practice for Kaysville Rec 4-5:30

Tuesday, Practice for RMSB 6-8

Wednesday, Game Kaysville Rec

Thursday, Practice RMSB 6-8

Friday, Game Kaysville Rec

Saturday Game RMSB Double Header

The Saturday games are 2 hours and you had to be to the field an hour early for warm ups. Sometimes we were traveling to Park City, Logan, Riverton, and Midvale so you had to give yourself plenty of travel time. As a result, we would be gone around 6-7 hours every Saturday.

This schedule continued until the middle of June.

Ok, now I know you are saying, it is way to much baseball. But we had a great time and Nick couldn't get enough. His team in the Kaysville Rec tied for first and went to the tournament and they ended up taking 2nd place overall. His coach said that they really needed Nick in the final game but because we were on Vacation in Washington DC, he did not get to go and Pitch. Nick was the #2 pitcher on his team and for the majority of the season, He was brought in as the final pitcher to close out the game.

We started calling him " The Closer". After I looked at some of his pitchers, it was obvious that this was a good nick name. It appears that he likes to close his eyes right when the ball hits the bat. We have been teasing him about it. Nick struck out 14 out of the last 17 kids he pitched against.

The RMSB team ended up right in the middle of the pack. They were a very good team and the plan is to keep these kids together over the next years so that they can play High School ball together. Nick can't wait until next year.

In the mean time, we only have playing catch in the back yard to keep us busy.
