A few years ago I received an interesting call from one of the ladies in our ward to come and assist her husband and a bunch of other men in moving a Giant Pumpkin. It was really quite a feat. 10 - 15 mean all gathered around a very large Pumpkin, pushing, pulling, rolling and dragging it onto first a tarp, then a Pallet and finally onto a trailer so they could go to the "Giant Pumpkin Growing Contest"
They never win but man do they grow some big ones.
Well this year, i asked them if they would give me a seed or two to give it a run. We don't have enough room in our humble little garden but I had just the place in mind. My father in law has the garden to die for will not a weed in sight and plenty of room to grow such a thing. He consented and so we planted 2 pumpkins plants in his garden in May. The first seed was from a pumpkin that had grown to be 711 lbs. the year before. I was placing my money on this one. The second seed came from a little brother of the big one and only grew to be 528 lbs. Hence the seeds were labeled. 711 and 528.
Well, after an entire summer of neglect, the 711 plant produced a single pumpkin of about 3 pounds and less than a soccer ball size. However, our 528 produced a monster of around 250 lbs and was with no special care. My brother Paul helped me retrieve it and we were able to get it to our Front Porch where it anxiously awaits to be carved by Stacey.
Next year, we have decided we will grow some big ones and we are going to work hard to see what we can do..
